Service We Do Worldwide

Despite much progress during the last century, women and girls throughout the world continue to face serious challenges. While they represent about one-half of the world's population, women suffer disproportionately from many social problems. Approximately 70 percent of the 1.3 billion people who live on $1 a day are women. More women between the ages of 15 and 44 die due to gender-based violence than cancer, malaria, car accidents and war combined. About 90 million girls around the world are deprived of primary education. These are but a few statistics illuminating the obstacles facing women and girls around the world.

live your dream

Soroptimist created the Live Your Dream campaign to raise awareness about these challenges and inspire women from all walks of life to realize their full potential.

How will the Live Your Dream campaign help women and girls?
Proceeds from the campaign will benefit local and international Soroptimist programs that improve the lives of women and girls. This includes the Women's Opportunity Awards, which provides cash grants to women seeking to improve their economic situation through additional training and/or education. Since 1972, this program has provided about $15 million in cash grants enabling tens of thousands of women to make a better life for themselves and their families.

How can people support the campaign?
People who are interested in demonstrating their support for the world's women and girls may obtain a pin from Soroptimist Dallas members, The Women's Museum gift shop, or
order one from Soroptimist headquarters for a suggested donation of $10. Email siahq@soroptimist.org or call 215-893-9000 for more information.

Project Independence

Women Survivors of War

Project Independence, a joint four-year project between Soroptimist International (our parent organization) and Women for Women International, provides women in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Rwanda the tools and skills they need to rebuild their lives after surviving wars and internal conflicts.  the project has three componenets:

  • The Sponsorship Program will provide direct aid to 1200 women who will receive a monthly income, enabling them to support their families while they participate in skills training.
  • The Renewing Women's Life Skills Training will provide job skills training and leadership development for all sponsored women.
  • The Microcredit Lending Program will provide loans to 600 women to start businesses once they have completed the skills training program.

The fundraising goal of Project Independence is US $1.2 million.  Any additional funds raised will go to assist more women.
